Washing Machine Shaking Violently During Spin

A washing machine that shakes violently during spin is almost always caused by an unbalanced load, machine that isn't level, or worn shock absorbers/suspension rods. Fix the free issues first — redistribute the laundry, then check and adjust the leveling feet. If the machine has been fine for years and suddenly started shaking, worn shock absorbers ($20-40 for a set) are the most likely cause.

Fast answer

Redistribute the load first — a single heavy item (jeans, comforter) spinning alone causes violent imbalance. If the machine shakes with all load sizes, check leveling: all four feet should contact the floor firmly. Rock the machine corner to corner — if it moves, adjust the feet. If leveling is correct and shaking persists, shock absorbers are worn.

Redistribute load

Single heavy items cause severe imbalance. Rebalance and retry.

Check leveling

All 4 feet must contact floor. Adjustable front feet, fixed rear on many.

Shock absorbers

Years of use compresses them. $20-40 for a set. 45-min replacement.

Drum bearing

Grinding + shaking = bearing failure. More involved repair.

Step 1: Load balance

The spin cycle spins at 800-1400 RPM. A single heavy item — a pair of jeans, a hoodie, a wet towel bunched in one spot — creates a mass imbalance that the machine can't compensate for. Open the machine, redistribute items around the drum evenly, and restart the spin. This fixes the majority of occasional shaking episodes.

Chronic imbalance: if every load shakes even when distributed, the machine is level or mechanical issue. Washing a single item (comforter) always causes imbalance by nature — add towels to balance the load.

Step 2: Level the machine

Washing machines must be level in all directions. Even 1/4" off-level can cause significant vibration at spin speed.

  1. Place a level on top of the machine, front-to-back and side-to-side.
  2. Front feet are adjustable — turn counterclockwise to lower, clockwise to raise.
  3. Rear feet on many top-loaders are self-adjusting — tip the machine forward 4 inches, then set it back down. The rear feet will re-seat.
  4. Tighten the lock nuts on all adjusted feet.
  5. Rock the machine diagonally — it should not move if all four feet are in solid contact.

Step 3: Replace shock absorbers (front-loaders) or suspension rods (top-loaders)

Front-loaders have 2-4 shock absorbers that dampen drum movement. Top-loaders have 3-4 suspension rods with springs that support the tub. Both wear out after 7-10 years of use and lose their damping ability, causing the drum to bang against the cabinet during spin.

Replace as a complete set — if one is worn, the others are close behind. Parts cost $20-50 for a set; labor is 45-90 minutes. Access through the front panel (front-loaders) or by removing the cabinet top and sides (top-loaders).

Drum bearing failure

A drum bearing failure produces a distinct grinding or rumbling sound that gets louder over time, accompanied by shaking. Spin the drum by hand with the machine off — grinding resistance is a clear bearing indicator. Drum bearings are a significant repair (3-4 hours, $40-80 in parts) that often approaches the cost of replacement on older machines.

Frequently asked questions

My machine shakes on spin but not agitation. Is that different?

Yes — agitation is low-speed; spin is high-speed. Shaking only on spin points to a balance or damping issue (shock absorbers/suspension rods) rather than a motor or transmission issue. Follow the steps above.

My new machine shakes. Did I install it wrong?

New machines often shake if the shipping bolts weren't removed. Look for 3-4 large bolts in the back of the machine — they secure the drum during shipping. Remove all of them before operating. The manual will show their locations.

Is it okay to put anti-vibration pads under the machine?

Anti-vibration pads ($15-30 for a set of 4) reduce transmitted vibration and can help on slightly uneven floors. They don't fix a machine that has a mechanical problem — worn shock absorbers or an unbalanced drum will still shake, just with less floor transmission.
