Ice Maker Stopped Working
An ice maker that stops producing is frustrating but usually a simple fix. The most common causes are: the shutoff arm is in the up (off) position, the freezer temperature is too warm, or the water inlet valve has failed. Check the free fixes first — 40% of ice maker service calls are resolved without any parts.

Fast answer
Check these in order: (1) Is the ice maker arm in the down (on) position? (2) Is the freezer at 0-5°F? Warm freezer = no ice. (3) Is there water reaching the ice maker? Listen for the fill sound during a cycle. If none of these, the water inlet valve ($20-35) or ice maker module ($30-60) has failed.
The shutoff arm must be in the down position. Simple but missed often.
Must be 0-5°F for ice production. Check with a thermometer, not the display.
Saddle valve under sink can close over time. Verify it's fully open.
Frozen or failed valve = no water to ice maker. $20-35 part.
Free checks first
- Shutoff arm: The wire arm on the side of the ice maker swings up to stop production when the bin is full. Check that it's in the down position. Someone may have raised it manually and forgotten.
- Ice maker switch: Some models have a dedicated on/off switch or setting in the control panel. Verify it's on.
- Freezer temperature: Place a thermometer in the freezer for 8 hours. Should read 0-5°F. At 10°F, ice production slows significantly. At 15°F+, it stops. A warm freezer is a separate problem (condenser coils, evaporator fan, door seal) that must be fixed first.
- Ice jam in the dispenser: Sometimes ice clumps block the chute or bin. Turn off the ice maker, remove the bin, break up any clumps, and clear the chute.
Water supply issues
The ice maker needs about 20 PSI of water pressure to fill properly. Check the shutoff valve under the sink — saddle-type valves (the ones that self-pierce the copper supply line) can close partially or become clogged. Turn the valve handle counterclockwise to ensure it's fully open. If you have a saddle valve, consider replacing it with a proper 1/4-turn ball valve during this repair — saddle valves are notoriously unreliable.
Water inlet valve diagnosis
The water inlet valve has two solenoids on refrigerators with ice makers — one for the ice maker and one for the water dispenser. If the dispenser works but the ice maker doesn't, the ice maker solenoid has failed and you can replace just the valve rather than the whole unit. Test with a multimeter: each solenoid coil should read 200-500 ohms. Open circuit = failed solenoid.
Ice maker module replacement
The ice maker module controls the fill, freeze, and eject cycle. If water reaches the tray but ice doesn't eject, or the module runs continuously without completing a cycle, the module itself has failed. Modules are model-specific ($30-60) and typically replace as a complete assembly — twist off the old, snap in the new.

How long should an ice maker take to make ice after I turn it on?
After a reset or installation, allow 24 hours for the first batch. The first 2-3 batches should be discarded. Full production is typically 8-12 cubes per cycle, 6-10 cycles per day depending on temperature and usage.
My ice tastes bad or smells odd. Is the ice maker broken?
Taste/odor issues are usually a filter problem (replace the water filter if your fridge has one — every 6 months), old ice sitting in the bin, or the water supply. Dump and clean the bin, replace the filter, and let the ice maker produce a fresh batch.
The ice maker makes ice but it won't dispense. What's wrong?
Dispenser issues are separate from ice maker production. Check for ice jams in the chute (common in humid environments), a failed auger motor, or a dispenser switch failure — these components are downstream of the ice maker itself.
