Garbage Disposal Humming But Not Spinning
A disposal that hums but won't turn has a jammed impeller plate — something is preventing the grinding plate from rotating. The motor runs (hence the hum) but the thermal overload cuts power before damage occurs. This is not a failure. It's a safety mechanism. Fix it in 5 minutes with the hex wrench that came with the unit, or a standard 1/4" hex key.

Fast answer
Turn off the disposal switch. Look under the sink — there's a hex socket in the center bottom of the unit. Insert a 1/4" hex key (or the wrench that came with your disposal) and work it back and forth to free the jam. Once it moves freely, press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit. Restore power and run water before turning it on.
Switch off AND confirm no power before reaching into disposal.
1/4" hex key in bottom socket. Work back and forth. Takes 30 seconds.
After clearing jam, press red button on bottom before restarting.
Always run cold water before and during disposal use.
Step-by-step jam clearing (5 minutes)
- Turn off the switch. Verify the disposal is off.
- DO NOT reach into the disposal. Impeller blades are sharp even when stopped.
- Go under the sink. The bottom center of the unit has a hex socket — usually 1/4" on InSinkErator models.
- Insert hex key and rotate. Work back and forth — left and right — to break the jam free. You'll feel resistance, then the plate will start to move more freely.
- Use the offset wrench if hex fails. Some units include a disposal wrench (looks like a small crank). Use the same back-and-forth technique.
- Look into the disposal with a flashlight. Identify what caused the jam — glass, a bottle cap, a bone fragment, a utensil. Use tongs or pliers to remove it. Never fingers.
- Press the reset button on the bottom of the unit. The thermal overload may have tripped. Press until you feel it click.
- Restore power. Run cold water. Turn on disposal. It should spin freely.
If it jams repeatedly
Recurring jams indicate either hard items getting into the disposal regularly (bones, fruit pits, glass) or a worn impeller plate that catches easily. Check what's being put down the drain. If the plate looks worn or the grinding action is weak, the unit may be at end-of-life. Disposals typically last 8-15 years.
When humming means something else
If the hex wrench turns freely but the disposal still only hums and won't spin, the motor capacitor or start winding may have failed. At this point, replacement ($80-200 for a new unit) is usually more economical than motor repair — disposal motors aren't typically serviceable.
Disposal won't turn on at all (no hum)
No hum = no power reaching the motor. Check: (1) reset button on bottom of unit — press firmly until it clicks, (2) GFCI outlet under the sink — press the reset button on the outlet face, (3) circuit breaker. If all three are fine and there's still no power, the switch or wiring is the issue.

Is it safe to put my hand in the disposal to clear a jam?
No. Even with the switch off, impeller blades are sharp. Always use tongs, pliers, or the hex wrench method. Never reach in with your hand.
What size hex key fits my disposal?
Most InSinkErator models use 1/4". Moen and Waste King often use 3/16". Check your manual or try both.
My disposal hums briefly then goes silent and won't reset. What's wrong?
The thermal overload trips to protect the motor. Let the unit cool for 15 minutes before pressing reset. If it keeps tripping after the jam is cleared, the motor is overheating due to a worn bearing or failing winding — replacement is likely needed.
